Probiotics, or good bacteria in yogurt, based on the findings, could potentially alter brainchemistry and can help treat anxiety and depression.
Irish scientists studied mice that were fed the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus.Experts found that the mice showed fewer signs of stress, anxiety and depressionassociated with conduct disorder than mice given only the broth.
The results also indicate hormones or the stress hormone corticosterone significantly.This finding is the first time probiotics proved to affect brain chemistry. Scientists saythe bacteria in the gut interact with the brain through a nerve called the vagus.
Professor John Cryan of the University of Cork, says, "With the influence of intestinal bacteria, we can affect brain chemistry and behavior," he said as quoted by the DailyMail.
"Without exaggerating, the study opens the concept that we can develop therapies totreat psychiatric disorders by focusing on the gut. You can mengasup yogurt withprobiotics as an antidepressant."
But, he stressed that people who suffer from depression can not be cured by intake ofyogurt. The effectiveness of yogurt also depends on the probiotic strains in foods.
"These findings highlight the important role of bacteria in the communication between the gut and brain, and show certain probiotic organisms may prove useful in stress-related mental disorders."
